Route: Guadalajara to San Miguel de Allende

This log runs from Guadalajara to San Miguel de Allende. The entire route is on free roads, no tolls. It's a long day's drive, often on secondary roads. Note that the log includes the route to be used to transit Guadalajara on the southeast side of the city. This can be very confusing without local knowledge. The log should make it easier.

 

000.0 Miles (000.0 Km) – At the intersection of Mex 15 (from Tepic) and the Guadalajara ring road, the Periférico Sur. This was the end of the prior day’s driving log. We merge onto the Periférico which is signed for Mexico and Colima. Heavy traffic (RVs) must be in the outside right lane.

001.6 Miles (002.6 Km) -- Pemex #3749 is on the right and the left (same number on both sides of the road) with magna, premium, and diesel.

003.2 Miles (005.2 Km) -- Pemex #8297 is on the right with magna and premium and an Oxxo store. Work appears to just be beginning on a major intersection here.

004.5 Miles (007.3 Km) -- Pemex #4718 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel.

005.6 Miles (009.0 Km) -- An exit to the right is for Manzanillo and Colima. We continue straight.

006.3 Miles (010.2 Km) -- Pemex #7223 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel. There is no access to this station from this direction.

006.7 Miles (010.8 Km) -- Big Elektra building is on the left.

007.1 Miles (011.5 Km) -- Exit right is for Centro on Av Colon. We continue straight.

007.3 Miles (011.8 Km) -- Pemex #3444 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel.

008.3 Miles (013.4 Km) -- Pemex #8567 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store.

013.4 Miles (021.6 Km) -- Over the highway to Chapala. Exit right is for Mexico and Guadalajara Centro. We exit right to curve around to the left and head north.

013.6 Miles (021.9 Km) -- Merge onto Mex 23 going north.

013.8 Miles (022.3 Km) -- Pemex #3553 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store.

013.9 Miles (022.4 Km) -- Pemex #4244 is on the left (didn’t get the types of fuel).

015.9 Miles (025.6 Km) -- We exit right for Tonala and Mexico (this road is running parallel to the highway and is rough and has 3 topes).

016.2 Miles (026.1 Km) -- An exit from the main road for Tonala and Mexico Now the road bends to the right.

016.4 Miles (026.5 Km) – At a Y and left is to Nogales and right is to Mexico. We go right and are on a lateral road running parallel with the main road.

016.8 Miles (027.1 Km) -- Pemex #2823 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel.

017.3 Miles (027.9 Km) -- We merged left onto the main highway.

017.4 Miles (028.1 Km) -- Pemex #4857 with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store is on the right.

017.7 Miles (028.5 Km) -- We exit right and stay to the right to go onto the Mexico Libre. We are on a lateral road.

018.3 Miles (029.5 Km) -- Pemex #4529 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel.

024.0 Miles (038.7 Km) – New Pemex with no number yet is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store.

024.9 Miles (040.2 Km) -- 3 series of small topes each followed by a large one.

026.8 Miles (043.2 Km) – A turnoff to the right goes to El Salto. We continue straight and the road becomes 2-lane.

028.1 Miles (045.3 Km) -- A big interchange is under construction. We believe this will be a bypass route around the city of Puente Grande. We must detour right to go around the interchange on a 2-lane rough bypass road.

028.5 Miles (046.0 Km) -- Back on to the main road after the detour around construction. There was a military inspection site here, but we are not stopped.

028.7 Miles (046.3 Km) – Enter the city of Puente Grande (3 topes). The road running through this town is very rough and rutted (it is hard to tell the topes from the regular road surface). There are businesses and sidewalks directly along the sides of the road.

028.9 Miles (046.6 Km) -- Pemex #1604 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and a D Store.

029.2 Miles (047.1 Km) – Town plaza is on the right.

029.5 Miles (047.6 Km) – One way bridge with nice old stone towers on each end.

029.9 Miles (048.2 Km) -- Out of town.

030.7 Miles (049.5 Km) -- Road becomes 4-lane and we enter the small town of Laja. There is road construction here which appears to be the east end of a new bypass route around the town of Puente Grande.

032.0 Miles (051.6 Km) -- Pemex #9041 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store. This is a medium sized station with good RV access.

032.2 Miles (051.9 Km) -- Pemex #8435 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store. This is another medium sized station with good RV access.

032.4 Miles (052.3 Km) -- Km 165 marker.

032.7 Miles (052.7 Km) – The libre road passes under the cuota.

034.2 Miles (055.2 Km) -- Km 162 marker. Along the sides of the highway there are many shops selling clothes.

035.2 Miles (056.8 Km) -- We exit right signed for Mex 80 and 90. Just ahead continuing straight is the town of Zapotlanejo which appears to be a fabric and clothes producing town.

036.9 Miles (059.5 Km) -- Exit right is for Irapuato and La Piedad (Mex 90). We go left for Lagos de Moreno (Mex 80).

037.0 Miles (059.7 Km) -- Small series of topes as we merge onto Mex 80. This highway is 2-lane with shoulders and new surfacing.

038.9 Miles (062.7 Km) -- Pemex #3859 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel, an Oxxo store, restaurant “Angelita”, banos (bathrooms), regaderas (showers). There is a dirt parking lot in the back of the station which from the road appears to be a possible overnighting location.

039.5 Miles (063.7 Km) -- Km 154 marker.

042.3 Miles (068.2 Km) -- Puente Calderon.

044.9 Miles (072.4 Km) – A large lake is on the right.

045.8 Miles (073.9 Km) -- Km 144 marker.

047.2 Miles (076.1 Km) – Enter the town of Piedra Amarilla (no topes).

049.8 Miles (080.3 Km) – A turnoff left is signed to Acatic. We continue straight.

049.8 Miles (080.3 Km) -- Pemex #3751 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store. This is a big station with good RV access, but crowded.

050.5 Miles (081.5 Km) -- Km 136 marker.

052.7 Miles (085.0 Km) -- End of road shoulders, but the surfacing is still good.

053.4 Miles (086.1 Km) -- Enter the town of Las Motas (no topes).

053.9 Miles (086.9 Km) -- Km 130 marker.

054.2 Miles (087.4 Km) -- Out of town.

057.7 Miles (093.1 Km) -- Km 124 marker.

058.5 Miles (094.4 Km) -- Pemex #1621 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store. This is a big station with good access and room for a couple of trucks to park.

We enter the outskirts of Tepatitian (1 tope).  Road construction begins here; it looks like they are 4-laning the road through town.

058.7 Miles (094.7 Km) -- Turnoff left is to the town of Yahualica. We continue straight.

059.4 Miles (095.8 Km) -- End of road construction. The road becomes a 4-lane city street.

060.6 Miles (097.7 Km) – Kentucky Fried Chicken is on the left.

061.0 Miles (098.4 Km) -- Pemex #1619 is on the right with magna and premium. This station does not have good RV access.

Starting here the 4-lane street is divided with white lamp post and some trees between the lanes.

061.4 Miles (099.0 Km) -- Bodega Aurrera grocery store on the left.

061.4 Miles (099.0 Km) -- Road construction begins with the street now 2-lane with while the other 2 lanes are being repaired.

061.9 Miles (099.8 Km) -- End of construction. The street is again 4 lane divided.

062.0 Miles (100.0 Km) -- Mercado Soriana grocery store on the left.

062.4 Miles (100.6 Km) -- Pemex #1620 on the right with magna, premium, and diesel. This is a small station with tight RV access.

062.9 Miles (101.5 Km) -- Out of town. The road continues 4-lane divided.

064.4 Miles (103.9 Km) -- End of 4-lane. The road is now 2-lane with old surfacing with lots of patched places.

064.7 Miles (104.4 Km) -- Pemex #8455 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and an Oxxo store. This is a medium sized station and has tight RV access.

067.8 Miles (109.4 Km) -- We turn right signed for Arandas and Lagos de Moreno Cuota.

068.2 Miles (110.0 Km) -- Retorno for Lagos de Moreno Cuota. We continue straight for Arandas.

The highway now is 4-lane.

076.4 Miles (123.2 Km) -- Pemex #2814 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel. This small station has good RV access. Enter the town of Capilla de Guadalupe (5 topes).

077.5 Miles (125.0 Km) -- Pemex #6087 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel. Out of town and the road continues 4-lane.

078.8 Miles (127.1 Km) -- Km 26 marker.

081.4 Miles (131.3 Km) – Blue agave and corn growing along the sides of the highway.

082.9 Miles (133.7 Km) – Enter the town of San Ignacio (7 topes). Pemex #6992 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel. This is a medium sized station with good RV access.

084.0 Miles (135.5 Km) -- Road becomes divided with roses between the lanes.

085.0 Miles (137.1 Km) – Campanario Tequila is on the right.

Pemex #3607 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel. We are out of town here and the road continues divided with agave plants between the lanes.

087.7 Miles (141.5 Km) -- End of divided highway, but it continues 4-lane.

088.1 Miles (142.1 Km) -- Km 11 marker.

090.1 Miles (145.3 Km) -- Series of small topes.

091.7 Miles (147.9 Km) – Enter the small town of El Nopal.

093.7 Miles (151.1 Km) -- Pemex #6801 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel and good access.

094.1 Miles (151.8 Km) – Enter the town of Arandas (1 tope).

Pemex #9635 (not open yet) with magna, premium, and diesel is on the right. There is a big circle with an agave plant between the lanes.

094.2 Miles (151.9 Km) -- Pemex #9643 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel. There is no access to this station from this direction. The road is divided with white light poles between the lanes.

094.8 Miles (152.9 Km) -- At a big circle we go right signed for the Libramiento Sur. This is a 2-lane street with no shoulders and an older rutted and bumpy surface.

096.3 Miles (155.3 Km) -- Pemex #9616 is on the left with magna, premium, and diesel.

097.1 Miles (156.6 Km) – A turnoff left is for the Casa Pedro Domeq. We continue straight.

097.7 Miles (157.6 Km) -- Pemex #3713 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel. This is a large station with good access.

098.8 Miles (159.4 Km) -- Casa Casco Viejo to the left.

099.6 Miles (160.6 Km) – End of Libramiento and we turn right on the main highway.

A new Pemex (no number yet) with magna, premium, and diesel is under construction on the left just before we turn.

                        The road now is 2-lane with no shoulders.

105.2 Miles (169.7 Km) – Turnoff for the town of Jesus Maria to the right. You can see a large statue of Jesus on the hill.

 Pemex #3614 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel. This is a medium-size station with good access.

                        This road now has older surfacing with patched areas and some potholes.

114.3 Miles (184.4 Km) -- Pemex #7948 is on the right with magna, premium, and diesel. This is a big station with good access.

114.4 Miles (184.5 Km) -- Inspection fitszoosanataria on the right. We do not have to stop.

125.0 Miles (201.6 Km) -- Turnoff right is to the town of La Piedad. We continue straight toward Irapuato.

128.1 Miles (206.6 Km) -- Enter the state of Guanajuato.

130.7 Miles (210.8 Km) – Enter the town of Atotonilquillo. There is a beautiful ruin of an old hacienda on the right.

131.0 Miles (211.3 Km) -- Km 62 marker.

131.7 Miles (212.4 Km) – A turnoff right is for the town of Torrecillas. We continue straight.

132.4 Miles (213.5 Km) -- At a T. To the left is M Doblado. We go right for Irapuato and after the turn the road surface improves.
