Cathedrals and Abbeys

Shown below on the left is the world famous Westminster Abbey, considered to be the national church in England.

Many important ceremonies of the Royals are performed at Westminster Abbey including coronations, marriages, and funerals. It has been the site of all coronations since 1066. Elizabeth II who celebrates her 50th year as Queen this year was the last to be crowned in the abbey. The Queen Mother's funeral service was conducted in the abbey the week before this picture was taken. Rows and layers of flowers still adorned the lawn outside.

Two other Royal events held at the abbey during the past 20 years were the fairy tale wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles and more recently the funeral for the Princess.

St. Paul's Cathedral is London's other principal religious edifice. The original cathedral burned in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Christopher Wren was commissioned to rebuild it and today's cathedral is largely the result of his work.

The dome of St. Paul's  is the second largest in the world after St. Peter's in Rome.
