Buxton

Buxton is an old spa town with a spring where more than a eighteen hundred gallons of water an hour spring from the ground.  Like the town of Bath, it has several Georgian style buildings including a crescent and a stunning old opera house dating  from the 19th century. The main attraction of this town for us, however, is it's location - it sits at the edge of one of England's finest national parks, The Peaks District National Park. There are trails all over the park including ones which take off directly from the campground. There are also caves in the area which are open for exploring.

This sign on the left marks a very old and respected tradition in England of allowing public access to routes which have over time been used as footpaths. Throughout the country signs like this are seen. They're everywhere, not just in national parks, and lead across what would otherwise be personal property. We've walked paths which have taken us virtually through the back yards of houses. The owners never seem to mind.
