September 20, 2009 - Port Townsend, WA Area
We're in the Chimicum Escapee Park, located just south of Port Townsend, WA. The Mexico books arrived from the printer this week and it took us several days to get them mailed out to those who had pre-ordered them. The trip out here to the Olympic Peninsula is a little reward to ourselves before heading north for the Snowbird RV Show in Abbotsford.
The Chimicum park is one of 19 RV parks in the Escapees park system. The Escapees are one of the big three RV clubs in the U.S. The others would be Good Sam and FMCA.
Escapees tend to be full-time RVers, although anyone is welcome to join. The club provides services needed by full-timers like information, mail service, campgrounds, and most important: the chance to socialize with and learn from thousands of others living the full-time RV lifestyle.
The Escapee home park is in Livingston, Texas. You've probably seen this address before since it's also where thousands of Escapees get their mail.
The other 18 parks are scattered around the U.S. They offer members reasonably-priced hookup RV sites and usually very reasonably priced boondocking sites.
The Escapee organization also publishes a Travel Guide that lists about a thousandf other campgrounds in Canada, the US, and Mexico that give discounts of 10 to 50%.
Each year there's an Escapee rally, it's called an Escapade. The location changes from year to year but generally it's east of the Mississippi one year and west of it the next. We almost always attend, it's a great way to get togehter with friends living the RV life.
For more information about the Escapees RV Club take a look at their website.
Port Townsend, Sequim, and the Kitsap Peninsula
This whole area, on the west side of Puget Sound, is a great place to spend some time while visiting western Washington. One big advantage is that it's just a short drive and then a short ferry ride from Seattle. If you ride the ferries as walk-on passengers the price is quite reasonable. The the west side of the sound provides a much more pleasant RVing experience than the crowed urban east side. For place to stay on the west side of Puget Sound take a look at our book Pacific Northwest Campng Destinations.
Snowbird RV Show
From here we're off to the Snowbird RV Show in Abbotsford BC from September 24 to 27. We'll be on stage talking about Mexico and the Southwest three times each day.
This year we'll be joined by our friends Harriet and John Halkyard, authors of 99 Days to Panama and experts on RVing in Central America.
