March 30 to April 5, 2009
March 31, 2009 - Parked at Hotel Tepetepan, Catemaco, Veracruz
It's a real pleasure to settle into the Hotel Tepetepan RV Park here in Catemaco. Lots of folks we've seen during our travels this year are here too. Although we're scrambling to make it to Albuquerque for the Affinity Group Rally (Good Sam, Motorhome magazine, Trailer Life Magazine, Camping World, etc.) and to avoid most of the worst Semana Santa traffic, we also want to do a little birding along the east coast. This is the best time of year to do that.
Catemaco is an outstanding birding location. This morning we walked down to the Tepetepan River below the campground and spotted over 50 species. These included Keel-billed Toucans and Montezuma Oropendolas. Before this year we'd never seen these birds north of Belize - this year we're seeing lots of them in Mexico. Just goes to show that there are lots of things you won't see unless you're looking.
Rancho Hermanos Graham
Imagine our surprise last week we recieved an email from the owners requesting that we list this campground in the next edition of Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping. This granddaddy of Mexican campgrounds has been closed to camping for several years and we were ready to write it off. Now they're ready to be a campground again!
Yesterday we stopped and took a look. There's a new Pemex being completed out front. Back at the campgroud there's little change yet from prior years. Hookups are ancient and unusable. However, there's a brand new bathroom building with electrically heated showers, and new electrical service seems to have been brought onto the property. Perhaps other improvements are ahead. We'll be talking to the owners and full details should be in the next edition of our book.
April 4, 2009 - Parked at Trailer Park de Alba "Yuri"
Semana Santa Begins Today!
Tonight will be our third night on the Emerald Coast. We've been touring campgrounds, there are at least a dozen in the immediate area. Amazingly, it seems like every RV in the area is right here at Yuri's. That's real loyalty, before he passed several years ago Yuri made a lot of friends.
The fact that all of the RVs are here doesn't mean that the others around us are quiet. Its the first Saturday of Semana Santa and the cars and busses have begun to arrive. Large groups of folks from Puebla and Mexico City are setting up in virtually every campground, it's going to be a busy week.
We're not looking forward to tomorrow's traffic as we continue north.
Note to Readers About This Blog During The Next Four Months
If, during the next few weeks and months, it seems like this blog is a little short and basic, and that I'm a little slow in getting it posted - there's a good reason.
We'll be traveling hard, reseaching lots of campgrounds, and trying to get it all down on paper. We'll also be prepping, giving presentations and manning a booth at two RV shows. The Affinity Group rally is April 16 to 20 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Escapade is May 25 to 28 in Sedalia, Missouri.
Between the rallies we'll travel as far south as Cuernevaca to almost finish the research for the upcoming fourth edition of Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping.
